    Authentic contexts: Roles

Think about and discuss the ways in which you have used, or could use, authentic contexts in teaching and learning with your students. This tool prompts you to think about various possibilities for 'contexts' including events, places, activities, and roles.

    Roles

Providing authentic contexts is one thing. Enabling students to carry out authentic roles in those contexts is quite another. Authentic roles are those that serve a real purpose, such as the role of:

    • students informing the local community of an upcoming school event
    • students creating design possibilities for a new adventure playground
    • students researching and organising a submission to the local council
    • What kind of roles have your students taken when they have been learning in authentic contexts?
    • Would you describe their role as more passive (listening, waiting, following instructions) or active (deciding, arranging, organising etc... see below)?
    • Can you think of times when the more active role has been taken by a teacher, when students were capable of carrying out that role?
    • What conditions need to be in place for students to carry out authentic activities and roles to support their learning?
