    Authentic contexts: Events

Think about and discuss the ways in which you have used, or could use, authentic contexts in teaching and learning with your students. This tool prompts you to think about various possibilities for 'contexts' including events, places, activities, and roles.

    Events

Events in and beyond the school community can provide students with opportunities to apply their learning in authentic ways that integrate learning across several learning areas. They could be formal or informal, and may be one-off events or a series of events. Some events will be decided at the outset of a unit of learning, others will emerge, as students develop their key competencies, during the course of teaching and learning.

What kinds of events have your students been involved in?

    • What kind of role have they been able to take at those events?
    • What events can you and your students find out about that relate to each of the learning areas?
    • Can you and your students work together to extend the roles they take at these events?
    • In what ways do the existing events that happen at your school have potential to actively involve students so that they can strengthen their key competencies?
