    Authentic contexts: Activities

Think about and discuss the ways in which you have used, or could use, authentic contexts in teaching and learning with your students. This tool prompts you to think about various possibilities for 'contexts' including events, places, activities, and roles.

    Activities

Many day-to-day activities that occur in schools are potential opportunities for students to develop and strengthen key competencies. The activity examples below are authentic because they address real needs in the school community. Students are likely to be capable of leading, organising and contributing to many of these.

    • What activities currently led by teachers or other staff are students actually capable of carrying out?
    • To what extent are students' voices evident in these, and other, kinds of activities?
    • What potential is there for students to take an active decision-making role in day-to-day school activities?
    • What activities that need to remain teacher-led have the potential for greater student involvement (for instance, preparing an art supplies order, locating potential suppliers of playground equipment)?
